Dig! Dig! Digging!

Did you know Margaret Mayo’s DIG DIG DIGGING is one of our favourite books?

And there’s been a lot of digging go on outside Nursery hasn’t there!

We have all sorts of books on machines and diggers.

And these stories and non-fiction books help children “dig deeper” into facts about the world, and help children make links between different parts of their learning.

Our St. Paul’s Promise “I connect with the wider world” supports children to visit and revisit familiar places, to notice, comment and talk about what they see.

We have been fascinated with the machines.

Children have been noticing all sorts of elements of the diggers – the buckets, the arms, the tracks and cab.

We love to be out in the world!

We have a saying that “the curriculum is inside the child and outside the window” – it’s so important for children to have the richness and novelty that can exist in the world just outside the window!

C’mon! Let’s go outside!

Making Marks and Moving Fingers

Fingers! Fingers! Fingers!

What amazing tools these are – right at the end of our arms!

We have been

Cutting

Drawing

Painting

Using brushes, knives, pens, pencils, paintsticks.

All the tools and materials we have are helping children with the physical experiences and skills that support early writing.

It’s like a “finger gym”!

Did you know that developing these fine motor skills is essential for early writing?

Our St. Paul’s Curriculum – Physical Development – supports children to have control of and manipulate tools and materials – including writing tools.

Food! Food! Food!

You know how much we love food and cooking!

We have been part of Bristol’s Children’s Kitchen for a fair few years now haven’t we.

Jo helped us build our allotment, start our own kitchen and even gave us a wormery!

Here’s Jo and Beth filming us for their ‘Infant Feeding’ project and workshops – an important bit of training and professional development for Baby Room practitioners.

Tiff has been part of the project and is helping us think more deeply about how we are support eating and food here at St. Paul’s.

We love food and cooking!

We wonder what you love to eat at home?

What are your favourite foods?

Have you tried new tastes and textures recently?

Our St. Paul’s Promise “I can be healthy and make healthy choices for my body” supports children to be curious about and explore a variety of foods.
