5… 4… 3… 2… 1… Lift Off!

At the beginning of this term, we were led by one child’s interest in space and followed their learning to the moon and back! The children created space costumes and rockets using different materials…cutting, wrapping, sticking, joining. Don’t we look ready for adventure?

The children used torches to investigate large-scale images of Earth and the moon and asked many curious questions…. “Why are there circles on the moon?” “Where do aliens live?” “How long does it take to get to the moon?” We watched and reenacted a moon landing…curious about what it would be like to walk without gravity. We experimented this with our bodies and an enormous picture of the moon that covered the whole studio!

Our St Paul’s Promise “I can use all my sense to engage in Scientific Enquiry” helps children to be inquisitive learners, asking questions, researching and testing ideas. We are scientists investigating the world around us with awe and wonder!

Marvellous Mathematical Magnet-Tiles!

We are engineers in Nursery 1! The children have been captivated by the magic of magnet tiles. Investigating how different shapes can combine to create structures. Up, up and up we build with increasingly complicated creations….until….uh oh! It falls down! The children have been persevering to try and test different strategies to repair and rebuild their creations. This is really tricky learning!

The children have been imitating each other’s designs, learning from their friends….working together to create new structures…investigating what makes a structure sturdy and strong.

Our St Paul’s Promise “I can solve problems when I get stuck” helps children to be resilient. Confident to have a go and keep trying even when the learning gets tricky…and enjoy the challenge!

Creating and Celebrating Together

We’ve been preparing for our Winter Celebration by creating our own tree. The children used boxes, tubes, tape and glue to stick, join, cut, bend together. They had to take turns, tolerating delay to share resources and we’re so proud of our learning! We know we are great learners! As well as creating the structure, the children worked together to paint the tree experimenting with different ways to reach the top branches. Now, we’re designing and creating decorations to make our Winter Celebrations with our families feel really special.

Our St Paul’s Promise “I can belong to a group” helps children to feel psychologically safe as part of our Nursery family and learn collaboratively together. We value every member of the group as a great learner. We work together towards shared goals with each person making their valuable contribution. We take turns, we share, we listen, we are part of something bigger than ourselves and that can feel really good can’t it? Together we are our most incredible!
