Clay Play

Rhea – our amazing Artist-in-Residence – has been “claying” with children from Babies to Nursery – and teaching and supporting all of us to play and explore with clay.

We have been;

Squeezing

Slicing

Pushing

Tapping

Rolling

Pressing

Scraping

Cutting

Pulling

Pounding clay!

Sensory exploration is so important for young children – to learn about the world through touching, seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling or through recognising how their body is moving.

We want children to manipulate all sorts of different resources – natural and made.

We want children to explore the world with their body, paying attention to the sensations, images, thoughts and feelings.

We want children to explore, design and make.

We want children to express themselves through their many creative ‘languages’ and be creative thinkers.

Talk and Play in the City!

“A world in which everything invites inquiry and reflective questioning, a world as provocative of thought as it is of wonder and action!”

Matthew Lipton

Our St. Paul’s Promise “I connect with the wider world” means we support children to explore the world around them.

We want them to claim and connect to their communities, their city.

We want children to pay attention to all the sensations, images, thoughts and experiences as they talk and play in the city!

We went down into Cabot Circus to splash in the fountains and waterfalls.

That lovely shallow splashy paddly water!

Our St. Paul’s Promise “I connect with the wider world” means we offer children an enabling environment full of security and comfort, and also adventure and opportunity.

We know children are community-makers.

We know they create and contribute to their home, their family, their Nursery, their city!

Light Colour Shadow

Colour is all around us!

And as we forced the light through different coloured acetate children …

Examined and explored.

Wondered and experimented.

Questioned and tested.

Where does the colour come from?

Can I hold the light in my hand?

Can I add the light to my body?

Can I walk over the light?

Can I make a shadow with my hand or body?

Our St. Paul’s Promise “I use all my senses to engage in scientific enquiry” helps us plan and support children’s curiosity as they explore, examine and wonder about their many worlds.

Our St. Paul’s Promise “I use all my senses to engage in scientific enquiry” supports children to explore light, colour and shadow.

We use light boxes, mirrors, torches, sheets for shadows and coloured materials to create different spaces and environments for children to explore.
